  I just received a very interesting email from one of the top florist designers in Los Angeles who has been ordering flowers direct from farms here in Ecuador in which he told me at a local meeting of florists and designers the number one complaint was OLD FLOWERS. The importers and holding on to the flowers longer before can sell them to the wholesalers and wholesalers are doing the same thing in selling them to their retail clients. A typical rose has a 12-14 vase life but many of the importers and wholesalers are (dry packing) taking the roses  out of water and storing them at 33 F to stop the rose from opening so that it looks newer.

Each day as an owner or buyer of a retail florist, you are faced with the choice of where you will buy your flowers today. You must ask many questions of yourself. Where will I get the freshest flowers, where will I get the best prices, who will give me the best service, whom do I trust to be truthful with me about the quality and freshness, which supplier will have the selection of flowers that I want and need and still be able to come through with all the other elements that are necessary to the transaction as well. Who will tell me that they won't be able to provide what I am looking for, who will decide for me and make liberal substitutions without my knowledge. This is no small task and one that must be considered carefully each and every time you order flowers.


Just by the nature of flowers being perishable a lot must take place for all of these requirements to be met every time. You need to be able to trust your source to be truthful, have a reputation for quality as well as freshness, understand your needs and be able to deliver on time to meet your demands. As a buyer, so many times it is frustrating and time consuming as well as costly when the supplier can't, won't, didn't deliver as promised. The reasons don't matter, excuses don't cut it, and blaming someone else for their mistakes is just unprofessional.
